Chris Daughtry. Do you guys remember that name? Is it ringing any bells? Well, since coming in fourth place on American Idol back in 2006, this man has given us some hits! ‘It’s Not Over,’ ‘What About Now,’ ‘Feels Like Tonight,’ the list goes on and on. Just when you think he has faded into the background among today’s hottest artists, he drops a brand new music video in anticipation of a 2021 album release.
Daughtry’s latest single ‘Heavy Is The Crown’ has ignited the band’s OG fan base as the group moves to the beat of their own drum at a new independent label through Warner Music’s Alternative Distribution Alliance. Under this label, Daughtry also recently released ‘Hunger Strike’ with Lajon Witherspoon. All proceeds for ‘Hunger Strike’ go to Feeding America.
Let’s talk about this music video, shall we? It’s more like a cinematic experience if you ask me. Daughtry and his band did not come to play (except for their instruments of course). Between the dark color contrasts, explosions, and even fighting sequences, the visuals produced in this video are comparable to some of your favorite action films. For a second I did think I saw Liam Neeson. But don’t worry, it was just Daughtry delivering a highly passionate and inspirational performance.
“Never falter, never let them bleed you out, I’ll be standing when they try to bring my castle down, I’ll never bow down, Heavy Is The Crown.”
Just some of the powerful standout lyrics that truly sound like a metaphor for his own struggles in the music business.
Daughtry Was an Early Frontrunner in ‘Idol’ Season 5
Before his official singing career even took off, many fans believed that Daughtry was cheated out of his chance for victory in the fifth season of American Idol and was eliminated too early. I can still remember the absolute shock on his face when Seacrest called his name for elimination. Although he was signed to RCA records after the show, his contract limited some of his creative freedom within his music genre.
This is precisely why fans are so excited for the comeback of Daughtry. After five studio albums, the band is finally releasing the music they are passionate about. Daughtry will also be able to tour again this summer after delays due to COVID-19, so if there is one good thing that is coming to 2021 it’s that Daughtry is finally putting on the crown he deserves.
